Keeping a healthy mouth begins with preventive care at home and with your dentist
By being proactive and keeping a healthy mouth, you can prevent problems from developing, like gum disease, cavities and root canals. In addition to your oral healthcare routines, your diet can also play a big role in the health of your mouth. Dr. Francisco Marcano encourages all patients to take care of their teeth, gums and overall oral health both at home and by visiting our office for routine hygiene and checkup appointments.
Oral Health Begins at Home:
While it may seem like common knowledge to brush and floss, many people do not know that there is a proper way to take care of their teeth at home. You should get in the habit of brushing your teeth after every meal, gently, and in circular motions for about two minutes each time. This helps remove the plaque and bacteria that build up on your tooth enamel, which if not properly removed, can eventually cause cavities to develop. Additionally, by flossing twice a day, you can remove the food and bacteria in between your teeth that a toothbrush is simply incapable of reaching normally.
A Proper Diet Can Affect the State of Your Mouth:
Your diet plays a big role in your oral health as well. Sugary foods and drinks can cause plaque to build up on your teeth and eventually cause destruction of enamel and cavities to develop. Foods like popcorn or red meats can also get caught in between your teeth and allow bacteria to thrive if not removed by flossing. Drink plenty of water to help wash away bacteria and food particles after you eat and avoid sugary sodas and juices. Foods like celery and apples produce additional saliva and water within your mouth to help wash away food, as well as act as natural abrasives to help scrub your teeth clean.
